Sun N Fun 2017

There were lots of great outcomes from Sun N Fun this year!  We spoke to 3,165 individuals either out by the Kodiak or inside the tent – an increase of 70% compared to 2016.  One new idea for this year’s tent was the “green screen” where we took a photo of people and placed them into an MAF field program location.  Once we took a person’s photo, we emailed it to him/her with a thank you message and a link to the MAF website.  The green screen drew a lot of attention and positive comments from people. Other highlights included raising over $2,500 in cash donations and receiving 11 new Advocate prospects.

Advocate Innovation

Arizona Advocate Gerald Dafoe is in the business of innovation. In 2014, Gerald was a large contributor to the creation of the PT6 Runup Stand.  This is a turbine engine attached to the bed of a semi-truck, with an enclosed area for the pilots and mechanics. It’s used for turbine engine maintenance training. Learn More

Gerald’s most recent venture is Wash/Rinse Carts for turbine engine aircraft. Gerald worked with MAF Volunteers Bob Thiessen and Lee Hearst to design and create these much needed units.

Wash/Rinse Carts are a vital part of MAF’s daily operations. When an aircraft is operated in an environment around salty air – any coastal MAF base – the pilot must do a compressor rinse daily. Spinning compressor blades build up dirt just like your ceiling fan at home. At the end of the flight day, the aircraft engine is motored without ignition or fuel, and water sprayed into the compressor rinsing off the accumulated dirt. After the rinse, to dry out the engine, ignition and fuel are re-connected and the engine is fired up for a few minutes. Then at a determined hour level, a cleaning solution is sprayed into the engine with a rinse to follow. On the cart, one tank is water and the other is cleaning solution.

Retail cost for one cart is around $6,000. MAF’s cost through Gerald’s innovation is about $700. That’s over a $5,000 saving per cart! Not to mention the added benefit of the cart being operated by one person as opposed to commercial units which require two people.

We praise God for Gerald’s faithful use of his gifts to bring glory to His Kingdom!

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of
God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10

In The Word

To the Elders and the Flock
1 Peter 5:1-11

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Let’s give a big MAF welcome to our newest Advocates
Chris Dunlap & David Walkiewicz!

David Walkiewicz lives in Strongsville, OH with his wife, Stephanie and their 3 children. David is a captain and Line Check Pilot (Instructor Pilot) for ExpressJet Airlines. David is very active in his church and when he finds some spare time, he prefers to spend it with his wife and kids and also going camping. David is a Certified Flight Instructor for Private, Instrument, Commercial, and Multi-engine students. He was also selected for the Pilot Mentor committee with the Airline Pilot’s Association.

We thank God for bringing Chris and David to the Advocate Wing!

In the Word

Matthew 6:5-15

Prayer

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
